Massage therapy. Acupuncture. Reiki. They're all forms of complementary care that can support your body as you fight cancer—and they’re all offered weekly and free of charge to patients at Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care.
Oncologist Dr. Velmalia Matthews-Smith, referred to fondly by patients and colleagues as Dr. Vel, says these services can help patients manage side-effects and relieve stress.
"When we talk about the mind-body-soul connection, complementary care can be very therapeutic for patients," Dr. Vel explains. "So even though patients might be physically in the fight for their lives, they’re not forgetting that connection. I think having the healing aspect of these services as part of patients’ treatment plan is very beneficial."
CPH Patients interested in receiving complementary care should contact their nurse navigator to schedule an appointment.
