Canton-Potsdam Hospital recently unveiled its new onsite Simulation Education Center and "SimMan" educational mannequin.
Potsdam, NY – October 18, 2012 — Canton-Potsdam Hospital recently unveiled its new onsite Simulation Education Center and "SimMan" educational mannequin. Just as a fighter pilot in training uses flight simulation to learn how to manage potential emergencies, the Simulation Education Center at Canton-Potsdam Hospital is used by clinical staff to replicate real-life emergent situations.
The "SimMan" features computer-programmable respiration, heartbeat, pulse and a voice to communicate with its trainees. He can be programed to mimic a host of patient complications and was designed to expand participants' knowledge and experience in patient safety, crisis response training, critical decision-making, and enhanced teamwork and communication skills.
The new Simulation Education Center allows physicians, nurses and other clinical staff to perform simulated clinical experiences with the goal of rapid and accurate assessment and treatment. Staff can learn in an open, safe environment in which immediate feedback is offered and promoting patient safety is critical.
The CPH Simulation Education Team is already looking into what add-on training features can be acquired that will complement the highly trained healthcare professionals at the Hospital. The team includes Sue Quinell, RN; Austie Claxton, RN; Dennis Maid, RRT; Amy Boyer, RN; and Nan Rutledge, MS, RN, ANP-BC, NEA-BC. The Simulation Education Center is located in the Lamar building adjacent to the Hospital's main campus in Potsdam.
An open house and demonstration were held recently, at which staff had an opportunity to observe and interact with the "SimMan," listen to his functionalities, and suggest a more personal name for the mannequin. Fans of CPH's Facebook page can vote for one of 15 name choices submitted by CPH employees. The poll is posted in two parts, as Facebook limits polls to 10 options each. A winning name will be announced on Friday, October 19. To participate in the voting, visit the CPH Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cantonpotsdamhospital.
