CPH Recruits Strategic Planning and Business Development Expert

Potsdam, NY – October 23, 2012 – Recognizing rapid changes in the nation's healthcare system, Canton-Potsdam Hospital has added to its senior leadership team David Bender, MSPH. Bender has joined CPH as Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development to help the Hospital develop, analyze, and implement core goals that all hospitals must achieve to thrive in today's evolving healthcare environment.

With Mr. Bender's vast experience with physician practices, he will also have oversight of the Hospital's Physician Practice Management Department and will manage new provider onboarding, creation of an improved operating model and construction of state-of-the-art facilities for the Hospital's growing medical staff. In addition, Mr. Bender will help to establish a modern, data-based decision support system, which is needed to better enable sound and timely large-scale decisions and implementations.

Mr. Bender brings a wealth of experience to the Canton-Potsdam community. He served as a senior strategist with OptumInsight, most recently in the firm's Accountable Care Solutions practice, where he led projects that assisted health systems in evaluating and establishing Accountable Care Organizations. He was also Vice President of OptumInsight/Ingenix Consulting's Strategy and Governance Practice, where he led strategy projects for independent hospitals, large hospital systems, and physician practices.

Mr. Bender led the provider practice at The Lewin Group, now a subsidiary of OptumInsight. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the Group's hospital and health system-related strategic engagements including hospital strategic plans, financial projections, and medical staff development planning for several not-for-profit and county-owned organizations.

Bender was a Principal in Ernst and Young's Health Sciences Advisory Services Practice, where he led the health care provider strategy and market planning services including program-specific growth plans in oncology, orthopedics, cardiology, and behavioral health services. Before joining Ernst and Young, he was the Vice President for Planning and Marketing at North Charles Hospital in Baltimore, Md., a 215-bed community hospital, where he was instrumental in the initiation of an outpatient primary care center, emergency services development and later expansion, and ophthalmology center of excellence development.

"When there was an opportunity to recruit someone with healthcare administration, strategic planning and business development experience with a broad national perspective and experiences, we took advantage of it," said David B. Acker, President and CEO. "For a number of years, Mr. Bender [The Lewin Group] has been providing strategic guidance to our Hospital and I am confident that his knowledge and experience will complement our professional staff and help the Hospital achieve its vision of providing the best possible healthcare to the residents of our region."
