Community Donates More Than $923,000 to Hospital Foundation

Canton-Potsdam Hospital Foundation finished 2011 with 963 donors contributing more than $923,000, the most in the Foundation's 26-year history. "We are so pleased and humbled by the depth and breadth of support for our Hospital," noted Foundation Executive Director Laura Cordts. "It's clear that, even during difficult times, our community understands the value of our local Hospital, and supports efforts to assure access to care".

Donations to the Hospital Foundation are used to purchase medical equipment and technology, construct and renovate facilities, and improve services for patients. Last year's donations included $577,058 towards the Hospital's "Constructing Healthier Communities" campaign, which is helping to pay for the recent acquisition and renovation of the former St. Mary's School on Lawrence Avenue in Potsdam, the construction of the new EJ Noble Annex in Canton, and the construction of the new Center for Cancer Care on the Hospital's Leroy Street campus. More than $336,000 of the funds donated last year helped the Hospital with equipment purchases including patient beds, a 3D-4D Ultrasound machine, ventilators, and a special scope used for ophthalmological surgeries.

Donations also included a $10,000 bequest, which has been added to the Foundation's endowment fund to secure the long-term future of the Hospital. The Foundation's endowment is currently valued at approximately $10 million, and in recent years the fund has been used to collateralize loans for major projects and to cover the Foundation's operating expenses.

In 2011, Foundation supporters included 73 business and corporate donors, 29 organizations, the two Hospital Guilds, and 859 individuals, including 217 of the Hospital's own employees and physicians.

The Hospital Foundation was established in 1985 to help the Hospital in its mission by encouraging gift support from individuals and organizations. The Foundation is governed by an 18-member volunteer Board of Directors. In January of 2012 two new Directors joined the Board: Angela Gray, a CPA who works in Canton and lives in Waddington: and Stacey Howlett, a Dentist who works in Potsdam and lives in Norwood.
