These may range from clinical depression to schizophrenia, and can include learning disabilities, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and substance abuse diseases such as alcoholism. Psychiatrists use a variety of treatments for mental health disorders. These may include behavior modification, group and individual counseling, medication, or sometimes referral for surgery, depending on the type and stage of disease as well as the patient's physical condition.
Dr. Asar's research interests include psychoanalysis, cognitive behavior therapy, and hypnosis. She uses her spare time lobbying in support of the expansion of insurance coverage for children with psychiatric disorders.
She and her husband, Ramzan Ali, are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy exercise and physical fitness, painting, and travel, especially to Manhattan, NY to visit their son, Ehsan-Abbas Ali, a second-year law student attending Columbia Law School.
