Family Practitioner Knowles Joins Canton-Potsdam Hospital

Terry “Nick” Knowles, DO, a family practitioner, has joined Canton-Potsdam Hospital and will begin seeing patients in his temporary location at the CPH Family Health Center, 190 Outer Main Street, Potsdam, New York, Monday, August 2, 2010. Dr. Knowles is anticipated to move permanently to the E. J. Noble Medical Center Annex at 80 E. Main Street in Canton when construction of that additional medical office space is complete.

An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Knowles completed his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in physics and conservation biology and worked as a research assistant, accompanying faculty to Costa Rica to study the behavior of a particular species of monkey and to present his research at conferences.

Dr. Knowles went on to complete medical school at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, WV, where he was also an Anatomy Fellow. He subsequently completed a residency in family medicine at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center. A branch of medicine that views health holistically, osteopathic medicine is known for its patient-centered approach. According to the American Association of Osteopathic Colleges of Medicine, more than 4,000 osteopathic medicine physicians enter the US workforce annually.

Throughout his schooling, Dr. Knowles was a leader/facilitator on numerous committees, including the Dean’s Task Force to Promote Diversity. He subsequently became a camp counselor for troubled adolescents, teaching leadership, construction, and basic living skills as well as the Ropes Course. Dr. Knowles is a United States Marine who was honorably discharged in 1987. He is married to Susan Knowles, a Nurse Practitioner who oversees the Clarkson University Student Health Service.
