Medical Oncologist Joins CPH
Howard J. Gold, MD, a medical oncology specialist, has joined Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s medical staff and will begin practicing January 4, 2010. Dr. Gold received his medical degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and subsequently completed an internship and residency training in internal medicine and a fellowship in hematology at Stanford University Hospital. He then completed an additional fellowship in medical oncology at The M. D. Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas in Houston.
Dr. Gold is board certified in oncology, hematology, and internal medicine. Doctors of medical oncology have specialized training in medical and chemotherapeutic treatments for cancerous tumors. Doctors of hematology have specialized training in cancerous and noncancerous conditions of the blood and blood-forming tissues. As an internal medicine physician with a combined subspecialty in medical oncology and hematology, Dr. Gold treats adults diagnosed with all types of cancer, including cancers of the blood. He also treats noncancerous blood disorders.
“We’re very pleased to offer expertise of this caliber to our patients,” said David B. Acker, FACHE, President and CEO of Canton-Potsdam Hospital. “Dr. Gold was trained at one of the best cancer centers in the nation, The M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, where the most rigorous clinical trials are carried out.”
“I treat the whole patient,” said Dr. Gold. “My approach is holistic, taking into account emotional and spiritual well being, as well as offering the latest medical approaches to managing cancer,” he said.
“Researchers have developed new treatments that more specifically target cancer cells. This precise targeting causes fewer side effects by sparing healthy tissue. Also there are more effective medications available now to treat side effects if they do occur,” said Dr. Gold. “Cancer treatment is highly multidisciplinary,” he added, “and I’m looking forward to working with the excellent medical staff at Canton-Potsdam Hospital. In addition, I’ll be working collaboratively with colleagues at The University of Vermont’s Fletcher Allen Health Care,” he said.
Dr. Gold will see patients in a newly renovated outpatient medical oncology treatment area on the second floor of the main Hospital at 50 Leroy Street in Potsdam.
