Work Environment and Hazards:
Medical Technologists are subject to above average stress. Frequent exposure to unpleasant odors, fumes and sights; e.g., patient's conditions, stool and urine
examination, sterilizing culture media, necrotic tissue, exudates, sputa, etc. Constant noise levels due to a variety of equipment throughout the Laboratory.
Class I - Employees who have contact with blood/body fluids or items contaminated with blood/body fluids on an almost daily basis.
Special Physical Demands:
Light lifting (up to 25 lbs), frequent trips to floors, emergency room or outpatient
room for venipunctures, etc., with bending and stooping. May have fairly long periods of standing or sitting with intensely concentrated instrument work over half the day. Must have excellent IV start skills and experience with chemotherapy and outpatient infusion therapy. PICC insertion skills or willing to obtain is required. Will provide such services for inpatients as well at times. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds, must be able to bend, stoop, push and pull and has to be able to walk/stand most of the day.
Education, Training and Experience Certification/Licensure:
BSN preferred. Oncology Certification (OCN) required. If not currently OCN
certified will complete all necessary prerequisites and sit for next available

Position: Laboratory Technologist
Department: Laboratory
Particulars: Full Time 11 pm – 7 am
To rotate through all of the Laboratory sections (Department) and to learn the various tests, instruments, procedures and duties as required of the Registered Medical Technologists. Teach and supervise all interested students, technicians and new technicians and new technologists during their orientation procedures and relevant background in the Laboratory.
Certification/Licensure:
Medical Technologists with Bachelor’s of Science degree in Licensure Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology or other related field registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists in the Medical Technology or specialty field, or any equivalent training and experience satisfactory to the Laboratory Director, New York State Department of Health, Laws of the Federal Government and other regulatory agencies, such as Joint Accreditations, etc. CLIA “88”.
Special Equipment :
A Medical Technologist will be responsible for the direction and skills, or other supervision of one to five persons, student technicians, technicians and/or technologists, depending on the department, shift, holiday or weekend. Will assist in training and evaluating student technicians and will be responsible for training new technicians and technologists.
Will provide verbal review of each student, new employee and/or subordinate to assist the supervisor with her written evaluation of subordinates. Will assist supervisor with recommendations for schedules, staffing and personnel decisions. Is also responsible for directing the work to be done; reviewing all work done in his/her section and/or laboratory and makes necessary decisions to provide constant and reliable results. Performs and/or directs specialized testing and/or procedures. Performs parallel testing in evaluating new equipment and/or procedures. Provides Quality Assurance views as required by superior. They cannot be official Department Heads until they are certified.
Work Environment and Hazards:
Medical Technologists are subject to above average stress. Frequent exposure to unpleasant odors, fumes and sights; e.g., patient's conditions, stool and urine examination,
sterilizing culture media, necrotic tissue, exudates, sputa, etc. Constant noise levels due to a variety of equipment throughout the Laboratory.
Class I - Employees who have contact with blood/body fluids or items contaminated with blood/body fluids on an almost daily basis.
Special Physical Demands:
Light lifting (up to 25 lbs), frequent trips to floors, emergency room or outpatient room for venipunctures, etc., with bending and stooping. May have fairly long periods of standing or sitting with intensely concentrated instrument work over half the day. Subject to electrical shock, burns (chemical and heat), infection from specimens and/or patient contact (e.g.; infectious hepatitis, tuberculosis, etc.), exposure to paraffin, lacerations, needle punctures, radioactive material and/or specimens.
