As times change, so does health care. People are living longer, and they have more complex health care needs. Today, the 55,000 residents of the greater Canton-Potsdam area need us more than ever before.
As our communities’ needs grow, so must our services. Each year we provide more health care than we did in any previous year. Outpatient visits alone have grown a staggering 72% from approximately 95,000 in 1998 to almost 164,000 last year. ER visits in the first two months of 2009 averaged 67/day (with several days being over 90) in a facility that was built for 40/day. From emergency care to newborns and across the board, we must keep pace with demand for our services.
To accommodate this growth, CPH now employs over 800 people. That translates to a greater impact on our local economy at a time when creating jobs has never been so important.
With these and other changes in mind, our Board of Directors has carefully and diligently engaged in long-term planning with the goal of preserving quality health care and meeting community needs into the future.
In June, 2009, the Potsdam Village Board created a health care zone that accommodates the growth that has already occurred and will allow for careful planning of future growth.
