Yes, Canton-Potsdam Hospital and the chemical dependency units do not discriminate on any basis for those meeting admission criteria; including; gender, race, creed, citizenship, marital status, color, age, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, treatment history, sponsor or HIV status.
Do you provide transportation to the Hospital?
Unfortunately, we are unable to provide this service, although we will work with the patient/referral source to arrange a means for travel. Transportation is available for our detoxification patients who are referred to rehabilitation units other than CPH’s.
How do you help patients who have medical and/or psychiatric problems?
Our Inpatient units are able to handle most patients who have either of these conditions. If a higher level of medical care is indicated, an individual is stabilized on another medical floor or transferred to another hospital that has an acute psychiatric unit.
What happens when a patient has a psychiatric crisis?
If the crisis cannot be managed on the unit, the patient is transferred to an acute psychiatric unit located in a general hospital 45 minute away for assessment and stabilization. Outpatients will be referred to appropriate mental health services (inpatient or outpatient).
Do you treat young people?
There are no age barriers in the detoxification and clinic units. The rehabilitation unit accepts those aged 18 years and older.
Do you work with those who are being maintained on methadone?
Our detox service will assist in supervising the withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs of individuals on methadone maintenance. The Rehab service will also provide services to MMTP-referred patients.

Do you have a mix of recovering and non-recovering staff?
Yes, about half of the staff is actively involved in a recovery program. All staff are committed to personal growth and development.
Is there a different treatment program for men and women?
While there is no separate track for women in any of the units, attention is paid to the special needs of women patients. Some are referred to gender-specific programs or programs which are able to provide special tracks within a coeducational facility. Attempts are made to identify abuse issues or living conditions which may not be safe and the appropriate resources are provided. In the rehabilitation unit and at the clinic there are gender-specific groups for both women and men.
How do you treat non-drug addiction?
Our professional staff is alert for the signs and symptoms of eating, gambling and other addictive processes during all phases of treatment. When such problems are identified, addressing them in treatment or in after-care, becomes a part of the treatment plan. Special attention is given to codependency in educational segments of the rehabilitation unit and clinic.
How is relapse addressed?
There is no separate track for relapse prevention. In the rehabilitation unit and clinic, each patient is worked with and helped to prepare a relapse prevention plan. The rehab patient is urged to take this plan to their continuing care counselors to aid in the efficiency of outpatient work. At times, individuals are admitted for a brief stay in order to become stabilized after experiencing a relapse.
