The Cardiology Unit provides a complete range of diagnostic evaluations and therapeutic options in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The members of the Unit have expertise in all areas of adult cardiology, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathy, congenital heart disease in the adult, arrhythmias, preventative cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation.
Diagnostic procedures include CT angiography, exercise stress testing, nuclear stress testing with Cardiolite imaging during exercise and/or with pharmacologic stress, radionuclide ventriculography, transesophageal echocardiography, 2-dimensional echocardiography, 3-dimensional echocardiography, and exercise and dobutamine echocardiography.
Stress testing services are offered in Potsdam and at the EJ Noble Bulding in Canton, by appointment.
The Arrhythmia Service offers non-invasive arrhythmia assessment (Holter monitoring, signal averaged high frequency ECG’s, event monitors, tilt table evaluation).

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Our comprehensive Cardiac Rehabilitation program is nationally certified with the AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation). The program is individually tailored to meet the needs of patients with chronic cardiac conditions such as stable angina or patients that have recently experienced a cardiac event or surgical procedure. The patient will receive education and an exercise plan designed by our highly qualified, multi-disciplinary team. The patient will benefit from the expertise that our Exercise Specialist and Registered Nurses offer. They will also receive individual consultations as needed.
The participants are closely supervised; with multiple hemodynamic measurements as well as continuous telemetry cardiac monitoring. The patient will receive education on their disease process or surgical intervention, the importance of exercise, stress reduction, proper nutrition, medication usage, symptom management, risk factor modification, and others possibly identified in the patient’s educational assessment.
This group exercise program is offered Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for a period of 12 weeks. The program starts with an initial assessment completed by the Exercise Specialist and Registered Nurse. The participant will also complete a psychosocial, educational, and nutritional assessment. Realizing the importance of keeping the participant’s physician informed of their progress, we provide copies of the Initial evaluation, mid program progress report, and discharge summary which includes outcome measures.
During the course of the program, the physician will be notified of any change in their patient’s status.
Post program, the patients generally report having an increased knowledge of their disease process, improved exercise tolerance, improved ability to perform ADLs, decreased symptoms, and an overall improved quality of life.

External Counterpulsation
ECP is a non-invasive option for treatment of symptomatic coronary artery disease, specifically chronic stable angina. ECP is safe, easy, and effective. The therapy consists of 35 daily treatments, one hour per day. ECP is administered on an outpatient basis and requires no hospitalization.
ECP produces an acute hemodynamic effect, similar to that of the intra-aortic balloon pump. Clinical studies have shown, ECP: Increased venous return Increases cardiac output Generates retrograde arterial flow Increases coronary perfusion Increases diastolic pressure Increases systolic uploading Decreases vascular resistance Decreases cardiac workload
The following patients are potential candidates for ECP: Patients with chronic stable angina refractory to medication (Canadian Classification III or IV) Patients not readily amenable to surgical interventions Patients that have failed surgical interventions Patients with a high risk of operative complications or failure Patients with co-morbid states Patients who are unwilling to undergo surgery

Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Our comprehensive Pulmonary Rehabilitation program is nationally certified with the AACVPR (American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation). The program is individually tailored to meet the needs of patients with chronic respiratory disease; particularly those that experience limitations in their functional capacity and ability to perform activities of daily living. The patient will receive education and an exercise plan designed by our highly qualified, multi-disciplinary team. The patient will benefit from the expertise that our Exercise Specialist, Registered Nurses, and Respiratory Therapist offer. They will also receive individual consultations as needed.
The participants are closely supervised; with multiple BP, HR, and O2 Sat measurements as well as continuous telemetry cardiac monitoring. The patient will be taught various controlled breathing techniques which will help them to increase their activity level while experiencing less dyspnea.
This group exercise program is offered Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for a period of 10 weeks. The program starts with individual physical therapy, nursing, and respiratory assessments. The participant will also complete a psychosocial, educational, nutritional, and functional assessment. Realizing the importance of keeping the participant’s physician informed of their progress, we provide copies of the Initial evaluation, monthly reports, mid program progress reports, and discharge summary which includes outcome measures. During the course of the program, the physician will be notified of any change in their patient’s status.
Post program, the patients generally report having an increased knowledge of their disease process, improved exercise tolerance, improved ability to perform ADLs, decreased symptoms, and an overall improved quality of life.
